Box Office Breakdown: Audiences are Taken with Liam Neeson

While it would seem logical to find a female-oriented movie on top after Super Bowl Sunday, an action thriller proved there was more than enough testosterone to go around. Taken, starring Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson, took in $24.7 million making it the second best opener ever during the same football period. (Last year’s Hannah Montana concert film grossed $31.1 million.)
Meanwhile, a romantic comedy starring an actual Oscar winner, failed to do what counterprogramming options are meant to do: score a touchdown. New in Town, starring Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr., earned $6.7 million and a disappointing 8th place. (Apparently Academy Awards don’t guarantee future success.) The romantic comedy raked in about 1/2 as much as Zellweger’s Leatherheads did…and that’s saying a lot.

Maybe the Minnesota weather is to blame for Renee Zellweger’s disheveled hair last night…
In her upcoming romantic comedy, Renee plays a consultant from Miami with a temporary assignment in the Midwest state. Of course, it’s always nice to have a warm body around when you’re cold. Thankfully for the Oscar winner, Harry Connick, Jr. is there to keep her company.
New in Town - also starring J.K. Simmons and Frances Conroy - opens January 20.

Box Office Breakdown: Beverly Hills Chihuahua is Weekend’s Top Dog

On a weekend with seven new wide releases, it was Beverly Hills Chihuahua that emerged as Best in Show. The film, one of the few family-oriented titles currently being offered, earned nearly $30 million over the past three days. That amount was enough to easily surpass Eagle Eye, last week’s #1. The talking-dogs feature also gave Disney its best October opening thus far.
Of the other new entries in the Top Ten, one was religion-centric while the other had political overtones. (Could this be an election year?) Coming in at #10 was Religulous, the documentary from Bill Maher. Although the movie was only offered in limited release, it pulled in $6,792 per theater. That was the second highest average amongst the chart toppers. Meanwhile, An American Carol, a right-wing satirical comedy, found itself in 9th place.

Box Office Breakdown: Forbidden Kingdom Kicks Past Forgetting Sarah

Favorable reviews and Judd Apatow’s association helped Forgetting Sarah Marshall nab a second place finish this past weekend. While some may have expected the adult comedy to debut at #1, the movie was unfortunately inaccessible to large segment of ticket buyers.
Meanwhile, Marshall‘s R-rated raunch allowed fellow new entry The Forbidden Kingdom to edge right past it. The action film, which brought martial artists Jackie Chan and Jet Li together for the first time, earned $21.4 million—just enough for the win.

Box Office Breakdown: Leatherheads Sacked by Competition

Despite George Clooney‘s role as actor and director, Hollywood’s powerful A-lister still couldn’t get his film all the way to the end zone.
Leatherheads, also starring John Krasinski and Renee Zellweger, came up short this past weekend found itself in third place. Although it looked like the football film was going to fare much better, Nim’s Island made a last minute score to snag second place. Previous winner, 21, made it two weeks in a row even with a $10 million loss.
The only other new film to enter the recent Top Ten was The Ruins. The film adaptation of the Scott Smith book scared up just over $8 million.
